DESCRIPTION
“By 2030, urban areas are projected to house 60 per cent of people globally and one in every three people will live in cities with at least half a million inhabitants.” – United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division (2018). The World’s Cities in 2018 – Data Booklet (ST/ESA/SER.A/417).
Not surprisingly, cities are becoming natural cradles to innovation and economic growth across many countries in the world. As the city populations surge, urbanisation will bring increasing social, economic and environmental demands on transport systems and other key public services. But it will also create an opportunity to promote sustainable development. One element of sustainable development is respect for the environment while guaranteeing economic growth and a fair standard of living. To achieve this, effective structural policies for public services are critical. Greater focus on providing access to safe, accessible and sustainable transport systems is also needed in this new urban age. The joint session of the Antitrust and Transport Law Commissions will further address these topics and examine the importance of transport between and within cities in advancing economically, socially and environmentally sustainable societies worldwide.
