DESCRIPTION
Bigger, better, more expensive: This seems to be the slogan of every large-scale sport event, no matter if it is the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup. Billions are spent to host such events, but at what price? Often, infrastructure built disintegrates unused after the event, with no perspective of long-term investments ahead. In an era of increased scrutiny of sustainable investing, it seems that sustainability is not top of mind for organisers of large-scale sport events However, the world is changing.
Organisations like the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are setting an example by adopting sustainability practices in their events and promoting green building standards. Is this enough or should there be stricter measures? The joint session of the Sports Law Sub-commission, the Real Estate Commission and the Environmental and Energy Law Commission aims to examine how infrastructure for large-scale sport events can be built in a sustainable way, with positive benefits to the host community. Speakers from different countries and backgrounds will discuss these topics.
